Worming

 
 

Heartworm, caused by the parasitic worm Dirofilaria immitis, is spread by mosquitos.

How to prevent your pet from getting Heartworm.

 

Prevention should be started at 6-8 weeks of age and continued for life.

 

Types of medication available:

Oral: a tablet or flavoured chew form. Given monthly

Spot-on treatment: small amount of medicated liquid placed onto your pet’s skin. Applied monthly

Injection: given at 12weeks, 6 months, 15 months then yearly (organised to be given at the same time as your pet’s yearly vaccination)

Heartworm detection in your pet:

Heartworm testing can be performed if your pet has been off any preventative treatment for an extended period of time

 
 

Dogs and cats are susceptible to intestinal worms. Whipworm (dogs only), Hookworm, Tapeworm and Roundworm

Recommended intestinal worming regime for both dogs and cats:

 

2-12 weeks of age: due every 2 weeks
12 weeks-6months: due once a month
Over 6 months of age: due every 3 months for life
